How I make

smoke firing

The process

I hand throw each piece on the wheel. When the clay is leather hard (i.e. not completely dry)

I burnish the pots, sometimes using a pebble, to make the pots smooth and shiny.

After bisque firing the pieces up to 1000°C, I then fire them in wood and sawdust with salt, oxides, etc. to create special effects.

Sgraffito

The process

after

before

Each piece has been hand thrown on the potter’s wheel.

I paint a bright underglaze on the leather hard piece and scratch out a design through the colour.

This technique is called Sgraffito. Each piece is individually made and therefore unique.
